Timing belt change for 2000 4 cylinder Toyota 4Runner?

My recently purchased 2000 4 cylinder (2.7 liter) 4Runner apparently uses a timing chain rather than a timing belt. The vehicle has 87K miles. Does the chain need to be changed? If so, at what frequency? I have gotten conflicting messages in researching this subject.

Thanks in advance.Timing belt change for 2000 4 cylinder Toyota 4Runner?Don't mess with it. The chain has a tensioner that keeps the slack out. I changed mine out at 200,000 when I had to pull the head and figured it needed it. Maybe it did, maybe not.Timing belt change for 2000 4 cylinder Toyota 4Runner?no. Unless it has excessive stretch

  • 2002 PT Cruiser won't start after timing belt change, can anyone help?

My friend and I just replaced the timing belt in my 02 PT Cruiser and now we can't get it started without the DBR 3 scan tool that the dealership has to reset the computer so it will start. I was wondering if anyone out there knew of an alternative to paying an arm and a leg for a dealership to come fix this problem? Or is there a way to reset the PCM manually?2002 PT Cruiser won't start after timing belt change, can anyone help? The timing belt has no effect on the PCM.

Did the old timing belt break while the engine was running?

The 2.0L and 2.4L engines are interference engines. That means if the belt breaks while it's running the pistons will contact the valves causing bent valves and little or no compression. A quick compression check will confirm this If this is the case the only fix is to remove the cylinder head and take it to a machine shop for a valve job.

If the old belt didnt actually break and you just changes it for maintenance then you have not got the belt on correctly or you've left something unplugged during re-assembly (though I cant imagine what).

Hope this helps you figure it out.2002 PT Cruiser won't start after timing belt change, can anyone help?I don't think that changing the timing belt will cause a fault in the PCM that would cause it not to start. Do you have it timed correctly? Are all three marks lined up right? Why did you replace the belt? Does the engine start then cut out? If you take off the negative terminal on the battery you will clear the PCM and any faults that would have been there will be gone.2002 PT Cruiser won't start after timing belt change, can anyone help?sorry my friend whit out the tool you can do nothing

How much does it cost to change timing belt?

I have a 1995 Toyota Corolla that's close to 118,000 miles. I just need an idea on how much would it cost to do it including and excluding water pump. I changed the timing belt once when it was 58,000.How much does it cost to change timing belt?I'm not an expert on this car but you generally need to replace timing belts every 60,000 miles, so you are just coming due. It will usually cost more at a dealer for a timing belt replacement than at a neighborhood mechanic, assuming you have a neighborhood mechanic that you trust for such work. I would expect a dealer to charge $500-750 for a timing belt replacement and a local mechanic to charge $350-500.

It is very likely that the mechanic (either at the dealer or an independent) will recommend replacing other parts, including belts, rollers, gaskets and the water pump. It's usually fairly difficult to get the timing belt off so it makes sense to replace other things that are in the vicinity of the timing belt. Therefore, don't be surprised if there is a list of other items that the mechanic recommends for replacement.

When I replace a timing belt, I almost always replace the water pump and I check carefully if any rollers or tensioning components look questionable. It's far easier to replace these things now and save the possibility of an inconvenient failure. But I hear you if you can't afford to tack on $200 of miscellaneous parts. How much does it cost to change timing belt?go to your local mechanicHow much does it cost to change timing belt?cheap I hear, not sure about the exact amountHow much does it cost to change timing belt?Cost varies, depending on accessories your car has, specifically: A/C, 2WD or 4WD. I can assume your car is 2WD with a/c.

The timing belt itself (the part only, cost %26lt;$50.00), but the installation requires removal of entire front of the engine. So the big cost is labor, probably $200 to $300. Since the water pump and timing belt are next to each other make sure to have the water pump replaced at the same time. You wouldn't want to go back 6 months from now and pay $50 for water pump and another $200 to $300 in labor. How much does it cost to change timing belt?when you do the timing belt its every 90K miles.

you got awhile to go before you need it done again

but most wont do the timing belt without doing water pump/accessory belts.

my guess on price would be about 200-300 bucks

When do I change timing belt?

I have a 1998 Volvo, manual says change timing

belt when u reach 70000 miles or 8yrs whichever

comes first. I have had the car 9yrs and mileage

is62500 do I need to change the belt now or can

I wait until I am closer to 70000 miles, and what

material is the timing belt made of metal or

rubber as in older cars it used to be metal. TKSWhen do I change timing belt?A timing belt is made of rubber and may be reinforced with braided steel. A timing chain is made of metal.

On most vehicles (not all) if the timing belt (or chain) breaks while the engine is running, it can cause internal damage to the valves (and of course your engine will no longer run) It is best to replace the belt as per instructions, either by age or mileage whichever comes first.

Rubber (even synthetic rubber) breaks down with age, which is why it is recommended to be changed at 8 years.

Good luckWhen do I change timing belt?60,000 miles is what I have always been toldWhen do I change timing belt?its better to change now , since..it will hit 70000 miles in a couple of days ride..When do I change timing belt?you need to do it now ,why wait till 70000 miles ,you will sleep better knowing its doneWhen do I change timing belt?To me, it is better follow the maker advise which is 70,000 miles or 8 years which ever earlier. Better safe than sorry, once the rubber (Common to nowadays car) timing belt broken, your engine needs to be overhaul completely. If it is in America may be not the issue, repairing and changing a car is the same thing may be, but not the same at the other side of the world, another thing to be considered is the safety of the driver and passengers.

How Major Is A Timing Belt Change?

I am considering buying a 2002 Hyundai Elantra. I just have a quick question regarding maintanence on the car. Is it a big deal if the timing belt was replaced on the car (is it as monumental as having replaced something such as a transmission)? How Major Is A Timing Belt Change?First of all, yes, the engine in this car is an interference fit engine, so in that sense, it's pretty important. On the other hand, timing belt replacement is considered normal maintenance, whereas a transmission replacement is not. Although it's very important, it's not nearly as expensive either, usually a few hundred $. The good news is the water pump is not driven by the timing belt on this engine. When it is, it's often replaced not because it has to come out anyway (can't think of any that do actually), or because it's convenient to do it then (which it is), but because the water pump going out can break the timing belt. The recommended replacement interval for timing belts for this engine is every 60K.How Major Is A Timing Belt Change? It is not too hard to change a timing belt.

It has to have cogs in order to keep the camshaft in perfect relationship to the crankshaft that drives it. So when it is changed, it is not just a question of loosening tension and slipping the old one and new one on. The timing marks on the crank have to first be lines up, then the cover taken off the camshaft it checked for alignment as well. Then there are the pieces of the cover to keep oil off the belt.

It takes usually about an hour, depending on the car. And the belts is usually around $30.

So we are talking less than $200 normally.

But if you wait, and throw the belt, it can be worse.

On about a third of the cars out there, you risk serious valve damage.

That could run more like $1200.

So change the belt about every 5 years. The number of miles hardly matters, since it is more the age deterioration of the belt from oil, etc.

In contrast, a transmission is much heavier so is harder to exchange, and the inside of the transmission is much more complex. Transmission rebuilds run more like $3000 with install. Although you can get a salvage one installed for more like $900.How Major Is A Timing Belt Change?timing belt is VERY important lol.

you first need to figure out if you have an interferance engine or non-interferance engine.

interferance engine will bend valves when the belt breaks, non-interferance engine will just stop running.

either way, the timing belt is going to cost you as you have to take apart the front dress on the engine to get to it. most replace the water pump while in there as well for good measure.

if you have an interferance engine and let the belt go long enough that it breaks you will have even more $$$ coming out of your pockets to have new valves put in the cydliner head.

I personally replace timing belts at 40-50k regardless of what people suggest. too much of a pain if it snaps as far as I'm concerned. How Major Is A Timing Belt Change?a belt usually costs in the 250 to 400 dollar range...they usuall try and sell you a new waterpump as it sometime has to come out during belt replacement...

I assume your keeping the car or you would not be thinking belt...if it has 80K to 100 K bite the bullet and pay the 600 for belt/waterpump combo...then drive for 100K without worry

trannys cost 1200 to 1600 [havent used the word monumental in a while.lol]How Major Is A Timing Belt Change?why buy a car that is not running what if the timing belt is not the only problem no way you can tell till you soak the money into it for the belt then try to start the car, not sure if i would buy it, please try to find something else. How Major Is A Timing Belt Change?A timing belt is a routine time change item. It varies from one manufacturer to another as to the recommended number of miles for the belt to be changed. How Major Is A Timing Belt Change?it can be very major if it breaks. well i would say it,s as important as the transmission because you need them both if your going to drive. if the belt breaks it can bend the valves and if the transmission goes then you don,t go.How Major Is A Timing Belt Change?Any mechanic worth his salt would change most timing belts in an hour's time.If you find a decent mechanic working on his own you would have change from 100 and that includes the cost of belt

Should I change my timing belt and water pump?

car has 113,000 miles on it.

should i change timing belt and water pump, all orginal?

should i also change starter and alternato and thermostate

thermostat was replaced at 65,000 miles

however, how long does the timing belt last, what if i waith another 60,000 miles?Should I change my timing belt and water pump? You didn't say what kind of car you have.

With that many miles I would have it changed. It is a good time. Changing the water pump is a good idea if the water pump is driven by the the timing belt.

In any case, change the belt, water pump and the thermostate also.Should I change my timing belt and water pump?I don't think you have to change it until after 200,000 miles. But every time you change your oil you should check for cracks or wear in your timing belt.Should I change my timing belt and water pump?Depending on who made your car timing belts usually wear out at about 75K miles

If you are going to replace the timing belt its a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time they are located next to each other and on some models the timing belt runs the pumpShould I change my timing belt and water pump? They recommend replacing TIMING (in the motor) belts every 120000. They recommend replacing the serpentine (on the motor) belt every 50000 or if it shows any signs of wear or damage.

Please! Can any body help me with some instruction how to change timing belt?

I 've replaced more than 30 timing belts on different car model.

Just disassemble everything around the timing belt cover. Then take the cover off. Then remove the tensioner. Then put the belt on and put it back together. No special tools.

97 Toyota Tacoma when to change timing belt?

It's been 92K miles since my timing belt was changed in my 3.4L V6 Tacoma. The manufacturer's maintenance schedule says to replace it every 60K miles ONLY if %26quot;Extensive Idling or Low-Speed Driving for Long Distances%26quot; for example as a police car or cab/delivery vehicle. My truck is not driven this way. When should I change the timing belt?97 Toyota Tacoma when to change timing belt?a timing chain or belt should be replaced at every 100,000 miles on every car, truck, van and suv. toyota falls under that catagory.

How do I know when to change my timing belt?

I just bought a used car and have no idea when the timing belt was changed. Went to a body shop and they looked at the belt and said that there is usually a sticker affixed to the belt where it mentions what mileage it was last changed at; however, my car did not have this. I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla with 173,000 miles on it.

I just don't want to get ripped off. How do I know when to change my timing belt?to tell you the truth you should replace it every 90,000 miles. if not at about 100,000 miles you take the risk of it snapping.

But a word to the wise if you ar replacing the belt replace the water pump also. They tend to be connected together, and you would hate to have to pay for more labor on a part that could have been done at the same time.

Good luck with everything. :)How do I know when to change my timing belt?First mistake is you went to a body shop. You should have gone to a mechanic. You can't just look at a timing belt without removing the cover and a few other item's (to gain access). I'm a firm believer if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you car start's ok leave it alone. If it jumped timing then take it to a mechanic and have it replaced ( I would recommend a toyota dealer, you'll probably get a better warranty). My spouse has an 05 toyota 4runner with 160,000 miles and has no timing belt problem. Body shop's are for dent's and paint. If you don't want to get ripped off buy a repair manual on you vehicle and research it. it'll give you step by step instruction'sHow do I know when to change my timing belt?Pull the timing cover off and look at the belt teeth and look at the back of the belt to determine if it looks old and dry. Move the belt in and out to see how much play it has. You need to have experience to determine what you observe. If you have never checked a timing belt before have an experienced mechanic check it out. I'd replace the pulleys and waterpump while you're at it with the mileage you are at.How do I know when to change my timing belt?I would check and see if the belt looks excessively worn or if you are able to see the chords it would need to be changed immediately. Around 100,000 miles most people get the belts changed as if you dont it does sometimes cause serious problems to the motor if it goes out while the car is running. How do I know when to change my timing belt?if the belt is cracked or real weathered looking, you need to change it.it is not that hard to change one.just make sure that you have the crankshaft marked and the camshaft marked. do not turn the the engine over or turn the cam or the crankshaft.good luck

Hi How much does it cost to change a Timing Belt? I have a VW Polo 2000 and the Timing belt wants changing is it expensive to change? i want to buy the belt myself and get a garage to change it.

ThanksHow much does it cost to change a Timing Belt?A good garage won't fit a belt you provide yourself, as they cannot guarantee its quality. In any case, it is the labour which will cost most.

I'd ring around several garages for quotes. Again, a good one will suggest you at least also let them look at the tensioner and maybe other pulleys, depending on how it's set up, while they're at it. This is because it's often false economy just to fit the belt and have to dismantle it all again in the near future.

As already said, although it costs a fair bit that is nothing to what it will cost if it fails . . .How much does it cost to change a Timing Belt?about $400.00 depends on the vehicle, it's a huge job. also, i hope you will change the water pump, all external drive belts, cam shaft seal, crank shaft seal, re-fill new coolant, and a new valve cover gasket.

That is a timing belt JOB. not just replacing the belt. That does you no good when the cam shaft seal goes bad and starts leaking on the exhaust and giving you alot of smoke or if the water pump goes bad, then you have to take ALL THAT TIME TO GO BACK AND DO IT AGAIN, when you could have done it all at once because everything is right next to each other. that is several hundred dollars at the mechanic all over again.

  • New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?

We have a 1990 Honda Accord. In 2000 when the car had 10,000 miles we had the timing belt replaced. Now the car has 50,000 miles and the Honda dealership is suggesting we change the timing belt. Two questions: a) does the timing belt have to be changed because it has been 7 years and b) is $900 excessive for this? Thanks in advance.New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?it is 400 bucks including waterpump and drive belts. and yes 7 yrs is long enought to get it done as the rubber starts to rot.

here is a phone number here in ohio that will give you a quote so u can get a reasonable idea of reality. (614) 792-5100. you also might want to examine the drive belts. see if they have an dry rot or show aging. if they do, then the timing belt will also. if they look great, forget about it. but for 400 bucks, u can err on the side of caution.New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?the mileage does not add up to changing a timing belt i am assuming that you meant 100k then 150k. I would change them at least every 60k to ensure it does not break. labor wise i could see $500.... have them break down the price and shop around... you can also find shops that specialize in hondas and use honda parts but the labor should cost less than at the dealer....New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?I'm not sure what this would cost in New York, but I also have a 1990 Honda--I live in the midwest, but when I had our timing belt changed, it only cost about $200 max. I know that dealerships often charge a lot more for labor. You might want to check with another respected garage who might be able to give you a much better deal and do the same job!

I don't have the manual on hand, but I would suggest checking your manual to see what the actual schedule for changing the timing belt is. You've only put on 40,000 miles, seems pretty low mileage. I think I got about 70-90,000 before changing mine...although if there's any question it's always better to get it changed. If it breaks while driving the force of it can damage other more costly systems.New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?I had the timing belt/water pump/and pulley's replaced and it was 1200 on my prelude...and i didnt do it at a dealer...900 seems fair...really good, actuallyNew York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?at a dealer it will always cost you more than a normal garage, but its safer to do it by a dealer so if you have the money go for it.

  • Timing belt change on a 1990 geo prism?

I'm changing the timing belt on my 1990 geo prism. What is the easiest way to get the timing correct after I install the new belt? Thank you very much.Timing belt change on a 1990 geo prism? When I was first learning to do timing belts I was taught to set the crank at top dead center on #1 compression stroke. After the timing covers are removed, take a paint type marker and put a dot on each gear with a corresponding dot on the belt, and mark the top side of it along with an arrow in the direction of rotation. When the old belt is removed, align it with the new belt and make a dot on the new belt in each spot that the old one has. When you install the new belt, if all of your self made marks line up then you have no worries, finish the job and drive on :)Timing belt change on a 1990 geo prism? No. 1 piston at TDC and align the cam gear to the pointer.Timing belt change on a 1990 geo prism?get a manual move motor to in time spot with time marks all lined up release tensioner and remove belt install belt make sure timeing marks havent moved set tensioner turn motor by hand over twice make sure marks are still good replace cover and belts start car have a beer and smile

ThanksHow much does it cost to change a timing belt in a car?All of the belt driven accessories at the front of the engine and the timing chain cover will have to be removed. Depending on the mechanic, since this is very labour intensive, this could be several hundered dollars. Expect to pay around five hundred for parts and labour, at minimum.

If you want to save money, you could do this yourself for only the cost of the timing chain. Get a manual such as Haynes for your model and year vehicle. It's just a lot to remove.

The prices we give you here are meaningless to you since they have no relation to how much someone will charge you when they actually do it.How much does it cost to change a timing belt in a car? That will depend on the car. What parts are needed for a timing belt change on a Lexus RX 300 2001?

I know it will get a timing belt, tensioner and water pump. Should the crank and camshft seals be replaced? Is there anything else that should be replaced as a preventative measure? My Lexus has 106,000 miles on it. I know the belt should have been replaced at 90,000 miles but I did not find that out until it had 105,000 miles on it.What parts are needed for a timing belt change on a Lexus RX 300 2001?It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the crank seal while you have it out and apart. Seals %26amp; gaskets should be replaced if you see any type of seapage because the oil could ruin the new belt.

  • What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?

This is a major maintenance I got to do and I'd like more information on it.

How important is it to do it early, versus being 10k to 30k over recommended mileage?

Was it fixed right away or did it need adjustments afterwards?

How did the car feel with the new timing belt?

Did you select a particular brand of a timing belt?

What other repairs did you do simultaneously to cut down on cost?

That should keep you busy for a hot minute dear answerer! What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?Depending on the climate that the car is driven in , I would say that the timing belt should be replaced no later than 90,000 miles. This is to prevent having a timing belt failure that could cause more damage... Especially on a 2.5 DOHC engine, I believe that those are considered %26quot;interference%26quot; engines and if the belt brakes during running, you will most likely bend several valves and that requires cylinder head repair...

There is a possibility that the water pump is driven by the timing belt and if so the labor would be less to replace the pump at the same time as the timing belt as compared to doing it at a different date by itself...

As far as adjustments, the timing belt has a self adjust feature and should not require adjustment..

I always use Gates belts, Just my preference based on my experience..What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?Sincere thanks to all who gave advice,

What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza? For Subarus, the maintenance schedule recommends replacing the timing belt at 105,000 miles.

This is not something to skimp on. Is it going to fail exactly at 105k? Not likely. Is it worth risking your engine? Your call. If the timing belt breaks, you will be looking at new cylinder heads and a engine rebuild. Your car isn't going to feel any different with a new timing belt, unless your timing happened to be off beforehand. This is just a wear item that needs to be replaced. There's no %26quot;adjustments%26quot; unless you screw up the timing. There's really no benefit to going to anything other than the OEM belt, unless you just like the peace of mind a kevlar belt might give you. You'll also want to replace the water pump, the oil pump, timing belt tensioner, and idler pulleys while you're in there.

I don't consider this the easiest task for the average shadetree mechanic, so depending on your skill level, you might want to consider going to a mechanic for this particular maintenance. What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza? It is very important to have the timing belt changed. If it breaks while driving it could damage your engine. Take it to the dealer they will do it right. Follow that maintenance schedule in your manual that is all you need to do. Subaru will warranty the parts for 1 year. If within the one year that car is damaged due to say a faulty part that was installed during a service Subaru covers that. No other garage will do thatWhat was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?Timing belt replacement is recommended for cars with 60K miles (for 1997 and older cars) ...or at 90K miles for 1998 cars and newer) When a timing belt breaks, your engine stops. That is why it should be done before that risk occurs.

Can anyone knows the exact mileage when the timing belt should be changed for a 96 Camry.

    Thank you very much,

Sai.When is the Timing Belt change due for 96 Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder Car?Most dealers tell you to replace them at the 88,000 tune up.

I have a 1995 and waited until 100,000 miles to change mine.

You don't want to wait too long. if it break while driving the car will stop right then and there. Also will warp heads in engine and they say they can fix that but I promise it will never drive the same again. When is the Timing Belt change due for 96 Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder Car?You should be about due, you could chance it and just keep driving, I've heard of cars going for 150,000 mi. on the original belt. If you have a %26quot;freewheeling %26quot; engine, even if the belt breaks, it will just strand you, it wont damage the engine.

If the engine is %26quot;non freewheeling%26quot; then the valves will hit the pistons, and ruin your whole day.

But many Toyota engines have a chain, I'd check that out, if your engine has a chain you wont need to do anything.

It should be easy to find this stuff out about your particular engine, the model code will be on the valve cover on top of the engine, and go from there. When is the Timing Belt change due for 96 Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder Car?every60,000 miles, but the toyota is a safe motor, not like honda where the belt break junk motor. toyota motor just put a belt and all setWhen is the Timing Belt change due for 96 Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder Car?usually hondas and toyotas are every 90 to 100K miles......walso water pump should be replaced at this time....

Downside of postponing Monterro Sport timing belt change?

I have a 2002 Monterro Sport, with a recommended timing belt change at 60,000 miles - not cheap to do. I now have 59,000 miles. What's the potential downside of postponing the change 10 or 20,000 miles ?Downside of postponing Monterro Sport timing belt change?chances are, you'll be fine. But if it does go, your valvetrain and/or piston heads will most likely be destroyed, which is much more expensive. I wouldn't push it much after 70,000 miles, if the car is valuable. And often it's not all that expensive to replace, depending on what is expensive to you.Downside of postponing Monterro Sport timing belt change? The parts required for the job are actually pretty cheap. Get inspired and do the job yourself!!!! Get a Haynes manual and follow it like a cook book. You will need some tools (metric). Start by power washing your engine bay with GUNK Orange. You will be able to see things more clearly, and it will make the chore easier since your ahnds will stay cleaner longer. You can also go to the ALLDATA data base. Many libraries have this. The precedures are all there. DON'T wait too long!!!!! Disaster will rear it's hideous head!!!Downside of postponing Monterro Sport timing belt change? The downside is the belt breaks at hi RPM bending valves into the pistons.Downside of postponing Monterro Sport timing belt change?keep the vehicle to its manufacturers specified servicing times

there is a reason why it was set out that way

What other things to change when changing timing belt?

i'm taking my car to get it's timing belt changed as a precaution because the car's got a high mileage.i was told that when changing the timing belt it's also good to change the fuel pump as well or is it the water pump?

i'm a bit confused.do you have also make these changes or is just changing the timing belt alone sufficient? What other things to change when changing timing belt? It's the water pump that you mean not the fuel pump.If you have plenty of money change the lot but i would never throw good parts away for the sake of what if.Would you change your brake shoes if they were only half worn, just in case. Would you change your radiator if it was 5 years old.No of course not ! ! If the water pump bearing shows no sign of wear or noise and a decent mechanic will be able to tell, leave it alone.A new water pump can leak and if the timing belt is adjusted too tight the bearing in that can fail just as easily as on an old one. What other things to change when changing timing belt?the water pump is driven off the timing belt in many vehicles. this is true it is good to replace that as well. they have bearings and will only last so long. it is so hard to get to them you should replace them any time you have them in reach. its vice versa with your timing belt. if you had to replace your water pump, replace your timing belt. timing belt faliure can be detremental to your vehicles head and valves. do not ever put off routine maintenence for the timing belt, recommended 80k miles on most vehicles. if you do to save a few bucks you will lose much more than that when it breaks and destroys your vehicles top end.

just watch out for the mechanic charging you too much on labor. if he will replace your water pump there is no need technically to charge you for the timing belt labor, because to get to your water pump you must remove and replace your timing belt. so make yourself aware of this, and try to reach a fair agreement with them. What other things to change when changing timing belt? When replacing a timing belt, buy the timing set. This includes (in most cases)The guides, the idler, the tensioner and/or the sprockets. You also need to replace the water pump and crankshaft seal, which usually comes in the timing cover gasket set. What other things to change when changing timing belt?with your astra you buy a timing belt kit which includes the pulleys tensioner and the cam shaft seals always replace these parts all together and the water pump as well is a good thing to change not really expensive but if the bearings break then big problems the job should take around 5

in the last week i have worked on 2 of these cars one was a precaution and the other the tensioner had seized and stripped the belt causing valves to hit the pistonsWhat other things to change when changing timing belt?Timing belt and water pump because the timing belt drives the water pump.

    cost varies with quality:

how much quality do you want.

you can do it for $100 at home but you need a book and some advice on how to do it. ( just the minimum)

you can have it done and do the water pump with it.

the water pump is Tbelt driven.

they might find the front seals leakiing and it would be folly to ignore that.

cars are complex and cost money to maintain.

if you play a game of denial , it will come back and really cost you. In fact this one issue ,makes mechanics very rich.

pennywise and pound foolish , for the engine, brakes.

    the whole driveline in fact.

    have it done right.

Front wheel cars are expensive to work on.

It was cheap to make , nows the time to pay for that decision. What is the average charge for timing belt change?$400 - $600 range. I would say most place would charge around $500 range.

Parts typically replaced are timing belt, and water pump. I usually change the belt tensioner for every other timing belt replacement job. If you mail order, the part should run under $100. Esp. Timing belt, low end I found for my civic was $40, and high end was $120 for Honda OE belt. Most mail order place had it for $80 - $90 range.

Doing this yourself isn't too difficult. The hardest thing is removing the crankshaft pulley nut. It is torqued at 140 ft/lbs and is pain to remove without some holding tool.

If you have not change the timing belt before, then you might want someone to show you how to take it out and put it in. What I usually do is set the engine to TDC, and run a paint marker between the belt, and cam pulley. Then take the belt out, transfer the markings to the new belt, and install and verify the alignment after. After the belt installation, take out the spark plugs, put socket over the crank bolt, and spin it to check for valve/piston contact. If you remember to check, there is no way you can damage the engine. Can the idler pulley on a Honda Civic 99 go bad after a timing belt change?

Took the car to get a timing belt change. There were no problems before the service. After the service, there is a rattling sound when the car is idle. Can the idler pulley on a Honda Civic 99 go bad after a timing belt change?the obvious answer is to take the car back to the technician who did the work on it and have them isolate the noise. there are several things that need to be removed and reinstalled to replace the timing belt and %26quot;new%26quot; rattles are usually caused by something that was reinstalled but not tightened properly. the chances of the idler being the source of your noise are remote. more likely its that a shroud is loose or that you have a new noise that is unrelated to the timing belt (you didn't mention how long between the t-belt and the noise). Rattles on civics are ususally from exhaust heat shields or from deteriorated catalytic converters.

  • Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?

How often do water pumps and their gaskets last? Can It wait until the next timing belt change? My car has 60,000 and is due to have the timing belt done but due to the high price of the job I was wondering If I could skip the water pump for now. What happens if the water pump fails? Thank you.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?Guy above never really answered the question. So here goes..

No.. you do not need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt. You can, while you are in there. It saves you the cost of the labor, you only pay for the part that way.

Hope that helps!Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?Water pumps and there seals last quite along time with regular maintenance. Some times, the life or your vehicle! You water pump wont fail cause your changing the timing belt. I would just have it cleaned out and re-fitted to your car after the timing belt is done. No need to worry about it.

If it does fail (witch it shouldn't) your car would over heat as it would not be pumping the coolant through your engine block to keep it cool.

Thanks!Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?I'm not sure what the previous responder meant by proper maintenance on a water pump and gasket. Other than changing the coolant there is very little you can do the maintain a water pump. There are lubricants available but since it is a sealed bearing they are basically useless.

Most of your repair cost on a timing belt is labor, which will be repeated if you have to have the water pump done later. The days of lifetime water pumps are gone, and since you got 60K on this one I'd replace it and you should be fine for the next 60K. Remember, if it goes (and since it's buried you probably won't know until it fails completely) and you don't recognize it immediately; you'll be paying for a rebuilt engine. It's a great investment.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?If you do a regular maintenance for the water pump it will work for many years in your car ,so you can skip it for now even if you will do an over all repair of your engine.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt? No. At 120k , it mignt be a worthwhle preventive idea, if it's one that takes a lot of labor to get at. A simple car w/o AC or PS, it's usually not that big a deal to get at as needed - when it starts to drip.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?the gasket will last until it starts to leak thats when u need to change it

How much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?

how often do i need to change a timing belt and water pump on my car? also, how much should it cost? should i have it done at the dealers or at a small mechanic shop if i chose to? which would be best? what are steps when having timing belt change? How much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?The timing belt needs to be change according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Lacking that knowledge, 60,000 miles is a safe interval.

The water pump does not need to be changed unless if fails.

It's not possible to quote a cost on changing either. Some are fairly quick and easy -- SOHC I-4s without the silent shafts can be as little as $150.00 for the timing belt, and about the same for the water pump. A bit less if both are changed at the same time, possibly. A more complex engine such as a DOHC 4 with silent shafts or a DOHC V-6 or V-8mcan be much more expensive -- several hundred $$$ or more because there may be multiple belts and getting the timing right is a chore. A few are downright nasty as the engine needs to be pulled to get enough room to work on them -- early Hyundai Sonatas were that way.

Any competent mechanic can do the job, you don't normally need to go a dealer. That said, the dealer is likely to have factory trained staff and may be familiar with shortcuts and have any special tools needed.

The exact procedure is specific to the individual engine. You need a service manual to get it right. Cam timing is hyper-critical. Mess that up and at best the engine won't run. At worst, you can destroy the engine if valves hit the pistons. How much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?Not knowing the car and the market you live in...

    $3-500 is a good guess...

Call the dealer and price them, sometimes they are so experienced doing a job they will quote less then an independent repair shop...

    Usually not though.

As your friends for a referral.

BobHow much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?check the ads in a free paper like the LA weekly or SF guardian.

they always seem to say when you should do it and what they charge. the water pump shouldnt be much extra (100?)since they are already doing the timing belt.

call a mechanic you trust and ask them. If you do not have one then ask your friends who is good.

the dealer will rip you off on price, it can easily cost double there

would you rater pay someone inexperienced at the dealer $100 per hour or someone who has done it for 40 years $60 per hour and he does it faster anyways (so it costs less)(and they take pride in their work)(and they will replace other parts that need it for cheap and leave pieces that are still good because they know)

The dealer might charge you for 6 hours because the book says that even if they only spend 4 doing it!

a VERY rough guess would be 600+100 for water pump

you do not need to replace timing belt very often. I am thinking 60,000 miles.

look up in owners manual or shop manual for your car for replacement interval.

What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?

My car is a 1997 Toyota Avalon that was recently tuned up. It is a car in perfect mechanical condition until recently when I had my timing belt and water pump changed. The engine light is on and the idle is rough. An Auto Zone diagnostic test determined that there is misfiring in cyclinders 1,3 and 5. Could this be related to the timing belt change, and will it cause damage to the engine? Of course the mechanic that did the work has closed shop and disappeared. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?Yes, that sounds exactly it. Especially since it involves all the cylinders on the same side of the engine, which I'm guessing is a V-6. Sounds like they slightly miss timed the cam for that set of cylinders. As far as damage goes, if it hasn't hurt the engine yet, it probably won't. That doesn't mean you should continue to drive it. I'd look into having someone re-do the timing belt. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?timing is off and valves are worped thats why you dont have any compretion it will idel rough if it is just a hair offWhat causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?Make sure that the plug wires are on correctly and in the correct order and check the plug gap it should be 0.44 and the timing is 10degrees btc couldn't find the firing order but some one should have it make sure that all of this is correct then if you are still having this problem then go back to whoever done the work lots of luck!!!!!!!!!!What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change? The timing is off a little bit. Sometimes the timing belt stretches a bit after it gets put on (a competent mechanic should know this) and the timing gear is now probably off about a tooth. It won't really hurt the engine, but the engine won't run as smoostly as it should and you won't be able to pass an emissions test with it that way. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?it sounds like a timing issue i am not sure if the engine in that car is a interferance engine or not you could have possible bent valves if it is my advice would be to seek a qualified mechanic i hope this will help the right cam is probably off 2 teethWhat causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?the timing belt was probably installed incorrectly and needs to be fixed asap. and yes it will damage your engine if left alone and you are driving a lot. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change? It's definetly a timing problem. Get if fixed quick...

What parts should i change in order to completely do a timing belt change on an '01 mitsubishi galant?

I own a 2001 mitsubishi galant es, 4 cylinder, and i just reached 150,000 miles and would need to do a timing belt change asap because the vibration of the engine is increasing and the change of the belt is needed at this point. I would however like to know what are all the parts, besides the water pump, that i need to change when doing the timing belt change. Thank you for your help. What parts should i change in order to completely do a timing belt change on an '01 mitsubishi galant?Replace the balance shaft belt and timing belt, check the water pump weep hole for coolant leakage because if you have it that far down it would be easier to replace.

It was rare for the idler or tensoner bearings to be bad but check them for bearing roughness anyhow of course.

Is 600 dollars about right for timing belt change on a 1997 Prelude?

    For 600 they change:

    Timing Belt

    Water Pump

    Drive Belts

    Coolant Flush

    4-5 hours of labor

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx?br>

    COST = $600

Is that good or no?Is 600 dollars about right for timing belt change on a 1997 Prelude?Considering the timing belt and the waterpump can be changed at the same time, it should be a little less. It took me about 1-2 hours to change them both ( had a problem getting the crank off)

If you don't have experience with doing this then have a shop do it. Everything else can be done at home for a cheaper price with everyday tools.

your ac belt and alternator belt can be changed at home just by loosening up the bolts removing the belts and putting on the new one and then tightening up the bolts again ( less than 30 minutes)

the fluids can be drained into a jug or something and refilled in about 30 minutes also

If you can do these things alone and have a shop repair the pump and timing belt, it should be considerably less. prolly 250$

but yes, if a shop had to fix everything that you mentioned for you, then it would be roughly around 450-600 for parts and labor.

I hope this helps, thank you for reading and for the question. Is 600 dollars about right for timing belt change on a 1997 Prelude?Coolant is easy to do yourself. He's probably not charging you anything for the belt since he has to remove them to do the timing belt. I'd say 600 bucks sounds about average. It's a pita but you come away ~$400 richer. Is 600 dollars about right for timing belt change on a 1997 Prelude?Well, you might be paying $100 per hour and that's expected. You might find cheaper parts, but that would compromise reliability. Shop for a cheaper price for labor, but make sure the mechanic has experience with this engine. You might save money doing your own coolant flush. Is 600 dollars about right for timing belt change on a 1997 Prelude?Be sure they use only genuine HONDA COOLANT. Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?

I've done 200,000km from new in %26quot;severe conditions%26quot; [ ie hot Australian climate all year ] and had one timing belt change. Now due for the 2nd. One mechanic reckons to replace water pump at the same time as preventative maintenance seeing he's got that part of the engine opened up. Another mechanic reckons I could get 300,000km out of a water pump. The pump is not making any noise at this time. Any help appreciated.Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?On your Honda the WP is driven by the timing belt. Very little extra labor is involved in replacing it as long as they are already in there to do the belt anyway. The WP may be working just fine now, but if it fails next week or next month or next year you'll have to pay all that labor cost again to go back in and change it out.

I always recommend replacing the WP on Honda's with every-other T-belt change, but it is preventive, not required maintenance and therefore entirely up to you. Just remember that if you opt not to replace it and it fails later on, you can't blame the mechanic. He gave you the option.

Yiou've been lucky so far - I've never found a pump that lasted for 200,000 km. All Camrys sold in the US from 1990-2001 have a timing belt, not a timing chain.

    Toyota's FAQ: %26quot;Does my vehicle have a timing belt or a timing chain?%26quot;

    http://www.toyota.com/help/faqs/service-

For model year 1998 and older vehicles (such as yours), Toyota recommends inspecting the timing belt at the initial 60,000 mile or 4 year interval, and re-inspect at every 15,000 mile interval thereafter. But, since the costs for inspection is about the same as that of replacement, you should probably just change it at every 60,000 mile or 4 year interval.

    Toyota's FAQ: %26quot;What maintenance is required on my timing belt?%26quot;
