My mechanic wants to charge me $600 for
it. If I have to do it, are there less e
xpensive alternatives? Dealer of course wants $1,600. Not going to work. Thanks.Do you really need to change the timing belt on an Acura 2001 at the 105,000 miles as suggested?you should have it changed now while its okay compared to when the belt snaps and youll have to rebuild the whole thing for a steep price....and the cheaper alternative is to do it yourself...timing belt for $30 and waterpump for $70 and some silicon gasket maker for $7 plus another $5 for the coolant...and a whole day of working on the car...so the mechanics price is pretty reasonable...Do you really need to change the timing belt on an Acura 2001 at the 105,000 miles as suggested?the only reason they want to change it is because so many have wore out at around 100,000 miles and if you were to change it ahead of time you would be ahead of the game... waiting for it to break or get weak and slip would be a pain in the butt especially if you were parking with the maid out in the woods.... The dealer charges so much because they have a book and a set scale that they have to charge, even if it does not take the alloted time.. You mechanic is just a regular guy who loves his work and would rathere keep friends then the dealer who does not give a crapDo you really need to change the timing belt on an Acura 2001 at the 105,000 miles as suggested?Your car will continue to work for awhile. But when the timing belt does break, it makes an awful mess of the valves and pistons, etc, and is much more expensive. Start saving the $600 up.
(This is why used cars are cheaper than new cars.)Do you really need to change the timing belt on an Acura 2001 at the 105,000 miles as suggested?Do you feel lucky?
To me $600 at a time when it is booked in and you can make arrangements for OR...$3000 and up for a new engine and sitting on the side of the road for recovery on your way to something important!
It is a no brainer, surely?Do you really need to change the timing belt on an Acura 2001 at the 105,000 miles as suggested?Change it. It is an interference engine, meaning if the belt brakes it will cause internal engine parts to hit each other, causing very expensive damage, its not worth the gambleDo you really need to change the timing belt on an Acura 2001 at the 105,000 miles as suggested?Simple answer - yes.

The belt will eventually break. And that means few thousand dollars in engine damage. And even after the repair, the engine will NEVER be the same.
