I agree that some manufacturers probably artificially big this up as needing doing the second your car hits the age/mileage marker, but it's still an important thing to do.

On a lot of cars, it is not the belt that goes but often a tensioner - these are sometimes quite cheaply made parts and bears seize and fail in them. When the tensioner goes, your belt can jump a few teeth and that's enough to cause huge problems.

Similarly the water pump bearings do not last forever. Usually when changing the belt you change seals too and maybe tensioner it its bad ( crank seal , cam seals, etc)

HINT : the Timing belts usually break faster with hard driving , over revving , racing, etc . So if you dont really drive hard you shouldn't have to worry . However if you are a speed racer like me its good to do it between 70-100K miles.

For the 20 yrs Experience mechanic , most toyota's and Lexus's have TIMING BELTS NOT chains. The avalon is equipped with a TIMING BELT . Most NISSAN'S/ Infinities have timing chains.

Maybe when they said it has gone they meant its worn down too much? I don't know. Mine snapped on me in my first car. I was driving home from work in the middle of winter and had to sit in my car for an hour till the tow truck came. I was lucky I was at the top though becuase I was able to coast down the rest of the overpass and get off on the offramp.

The only thing though is when it went it snapped and wrecked my pistons or something. So the whole engine had to be replaced.

NOTE rebuilt sl engines [single cam] are rather inexpensive from Saturn if your body and interior are still in good shape you may be money ahead to replace the engine especially if you know that valves are bent. this is an awkward engine to remove[sub-frame comes out with engine and trans] and should only be done on a lift. hope i helped and use caution jacking and blocking,[ you can only be dead once.] and good luck

Remove the valve cover where the number 1 cylinder is and watch the valve spring open and close on the number 1 cylinder. Make certain that it is the intake valve not the exhaust valve. Remove the timing cover and look at the posistion of the dot on the large gear. That is the gear on the top. Double check that it is on the compression stroke of the number 1 cylinder.

Line up the two dots on the new timing chain in the middle facing each other on the gears. Rotate the engine by hand until the dot on the large gear is at the very top in alignment with the lower gear. That is actual top dead center on the number 1 cylinder. Double check your work. Rotate the engine once again and watch the intake valve open then close. The dot on the large gear should be in alignment in the middle with the dots facing each other. After that rotate the engine until the dot is at the exact top in alignment with the lower dot. Replace the timing cover and accessories. On this particular engine, the oil filter adapter housing/pressure regulator is bolted to the side of the front cover in front of the R/S inner tripod joint. Honda Accord 1996, new water pump/timing belt/oil change, smoke coming out from under the car and heats up?

I just had my water pump/timing belt replaced and oil change. When the pump failed, white smoke was coming out, which I figured out to be coolant from the smell. Now there is smoke coming out from under the engine, which I believe to smell like oil. Also, the temperature gauge goes up to the halfway point when I am at a stoplight or idling. The highest I have ever seen it is at 1/3.

I had my car serviced by the dealership and I asked them. The man said its burning oil residue from the oil change and that it will burn away in a few days. Is this true? I have had my car worked on and oil changed for the past year at this dealership and have never had any smoke or other problems. What else could be going on? Worse case scenarios. That had to come from a failed head gasket or cracked head/block. But, I've been wrong before any don't claim any more white smoke so let's assume changing the water pump fixed the burning coolant problem...

The smoke with the oil smell is probably just that... burning oil off the exhaust pipe. With all the engineering going into cars, you would think they could put the oil filter in a more convenient spot and especially not directly over the exhaust pipe(s) and certainly without mounting the filter horizontally. But, that's exactly what they did. When you remove the oil filter, oil will spill. That's a given. You must then clean it up or catch it to keep it from getting on the hot exhaust. Or let it burn off. How long it takes depends on just how much they got on there and maybe they got into some grease and got that on there too. That would take longer to burn off.

Now, about that cooling situation... Let's wrongfully assume the new water pump is pumping properly (I've had new parts be worse than old parts). The flow is actually controlled by the thermostat which should maintain the engine at around 190 degrees. These are very simple to change and cheap from Auto Zone. The dealer's thermostat will be much more but will be a better construction as well. Your call there, but it should have been changed with the water pump and especially after a boil over. With proper control of flow, the water absorbs heat from the engine and gets rid of it in the radiator. Be sure the radiator is in good condition and not blocked up with a bunch of grass, bugs, or bent fins. You do mention that the temperature goes up when at a stoplight or idling and that brings another element into the picture. Your car has plenty of airflow through the radiator to cool the water WHEN YOU ARE MOVING. It has NO airflow when you are stopped. No airflow, no cooling... simple as that. So, the car is equipped with a radiator fan that is utterly useless when moving but very important when you are stopped.

Checking it is easy... Get in the car and let it warm up to normal temperature... around fifteen minutes if a cold start. The fan should come on automatically once the engine heats enough to make a temperature switch that is mounted on or about the therostat housing. No fan, no cooling and over heating at idle or no air flow conditions.

You have the potential for three problems:

1. Dirty mechanic

2. Faulty thermostat

3. Faulty fan switch/fan (or the dirty mechanic didn't plug the wire back into the switch!)

Temporary answer: Don't stop! The wind will keep the engine cool and blow all that nasty smelling oil smoke behind you!

I was asked to look at a Forester SL (I believe it was a 98) that the timing belt went out on while he was driving. He was told the gear went out on it. I am just a mechanic as a hobby and I only have experience with V-8 and V-6 Fords and GMs, and 4 banger Hondas, but I have never heard of the timing gear breaking. I've heard that the flat 4s are a ***** to work on and I wonder if anyone could tell me what I may be getting into by looking at this for him. The guy I am doing this for knows almost nothing about cars, and I am wondering if someone told him the (tensioner) pulley broke and he only remembers it as the gear, b/c that is what I seem to be finding on line. Also, I seem to be finding conflicting reports as to whether this is an interference engine or not. Start by getting all of the external stuff out of the way - the hood is tiny so remove it (trust me - it is a lot easier to work on a car with the hood off). Jack it up and put it on stands too.

Remove any accessory junk, coolant overflow, hoses, etc., be very careful with any wiring and connections - then start taking stuff off the engine - alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor (you don't necessarily have to remove them, sometimes you can use zip-ties to hold them up out of the way).

Once you can access the front of the engine, remove the timing belt cover (sometimes easier said than done). I break most of them, because they aren't designed to come off while the engine is in the car (without jacking the engine up and removing a motor mount).

Be ABSOLUTELY SURE to check for timing marks on the crank and cam - if both gears do not have them, then you will need to mark the gears and the block/head so you can put it back into time when you put the new belt on. Failure to do so can cause a lot of wasted time, and could possibly damage the engine.

Turn the engine over (pulling the spark plugs makes this easier to do - and you probably need to inspect those anyway), until it is at 'TDC', meaning that both the crank and the cam timing marks are pointing straight up (the engine might be at a bit of a tilt).

Triple check your timing marks - and then release the tensioner (most people suggest replacing the tensioner along with the timing belt and water pump, but I never have). Remove the old belt, and then remove the water pump.

Install the new water pump - put the new timing belt on, line up your timing marks, and let the tensioner back down.

Cuss when it goes out of time when it tightens up and turns one or both gears. Release it again, and play with the way they are lined up so that when it tightens up that both crank and cam timing marks are EXACTLY lined up. If you put the whole thing back together and it isn't in time, you will be very mad.

The Probe was built by Ford between 1988 to 1997. It was a collaboration between Ford and Mazda built on the Mazda GD platform. It shares many parts with the Mazda MX-6. It is also an old car so I understand why you would want to do it yourself instead of paying a mechanic several hundred dollars.

First, get the exact year, make, model, transmission, and engine for this car.

Go to the Auto Zone website. They have an excellent Do It Yourself section. You can have online access to many service manuals for free. You can not download the manuals. However you can print any sections you will need. You must register to access this section. Registration is free. I have never received any SPAM by registering.

You should study your downloaded pages closely before you proceed to see if you are getting in over your head.

Some additional advice.

A little organization will go a long way.

Get some 1 quart and 1 gallon zip lock bags, generic will do. Get a roll of 2 inch masking tape. Get a sharpie. Every time you remove a part put it and any fasteners and any hardware in a zip lock bag and label it with your sharpie. If the part is too big for a zip lock bag, put only the loose parts in the bag.

Label every electrical connector, vacuum line, fluid line, etc, with masking tape and a sharpie

Most people have access to a digital camera. Before you start take several pictures from different angles of the engine. With each major component you remove take a new set of pictures. I have owned 6 of them and have gotten high mileage out of all of them. Get this service done like yesterday. Don't trust anyone other than the dealer or an experienced VW shop to do this service. When the belt is replaced they also need to replace the belt tensioner which many times will go bad and cause the belt to snap when it shouldn't have. Part of the reason the service is so expensive is because of the great deal of labor involved. You will also need a new water pump as part of the service, new valve cover gaskets and probably a new camshaft seal also. Even though this service will run you a 1k dollars a new engine will run you 4-5k so get it done. Also use a quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1 in this engine and change it early 4-5k as these motors had problems with engine sludge which can also cause them to fail prematurely. Never use dino oil in one of these motors! Good luck!

I had a timing belt go out on my previous car (17 year old Toyota with over 165k on the odometer at the time). Luckily it was a free-wheeling (non-interference) engine and there was no valve damage. However, I was stranded on the side of the road, had to pay for towing, and wasn't able to make it to work that day because of it. If the belt is expected to last 90,000 miles, I would personally probably change it every 85,000 just to be safe. You wouldn't run a car on almost-bald tires, would you?

Also, change the water pump at the same time. Might as well since you will be in there anyway.

Better safe than sorry, I always say. I find Toyotas to be extremely reliable, but even the most reliable engines will fail if not properly maintained and cared for. 1,000 miles may not make much of a difference, but all it takes is a stroke of bad luck to screw up a perfectly good engine. Although it is almost 35 years old I new right when I got it to replace the belts for ever thing. What I think would be a helpful bit of information is how long you personally have had this vehicle. Oh and to answer your question. Yes you should change your timing belt. In my past I find that if I ask questions about something (especially cars) its more than likely that it is a yes :) besides it never hurts to replace something.Is there any reason to change a timing belt on my 01 Tacoma 3.4 at 89k to be safe, or wait until 90k?The recommended mileage has a safety factor build in so you are very safe going to 90K, I would not go too much over that.

Timing belt change on a Honda civic.?

Its time for a timing belt change on my Honda, recommend at 110. and I'm at 121 right now. I'm starting to hear grinding from my engine which is a sign that the belt is wearing. I have an appointment on Monday for the maintenance, but I have to go to work tomorrow,(20 miles away and back) and I'm getting nervous, because I don't want the belt to snap on me.
