Honda Accord 1996, new water pump/timing belt/oil change, smoke coming out from under the car and heats up?

I just had my water pump/timing belt replaced and oil change. When the pump failed, white smoke was coming out, which I figured out to be coolant from the smell. Now there is smoke coming out from under the engine, which I believe to smell like oil. Also, the temperature gauge goes up to the halfway point when I am at a stoplight or idling. The highest I have ever seen it is at 1/3.

I had my car serviced by the dealership and I asked them. The man said its burning oil residue from the oil change and that it will burn away in a few days. Is this true? I have had my car worked on and oil changed for the past year at this dealership and have never had any smoke or other problems. What else could be going on? Worse case scenarios. That had to come from a failed head gasket or cracked head/block. But, I've been wrong before any don't claim any more white smoke so let's assume changing the water pump fixed the burning coolant problem...

The smoke with the oil smell is probably just that... burning oil off the exhaust pipe. With all the engineering going into cars, you would think they could put the oil filter in a more convenient spot and especially not directly over the exhaust pipe(s) and certainly without mounting the filter horizontally. But, that's exactly what they did. When you remove the oil filter, oil will spill. That's a given. You must then clean it up or catch it to keep it from getting on the hot exhaust. Or let it burn off. How long it takes depends on just how much they got on there and maybe they got into some grease and got that on there too. That would take longer to burn off.

Now, about that cooling situation... Let's wrongfully assume the new water pump is pumping properly (I've had new parts be worse than old parts). The flow is actually controlled by the thermostat which should maintain the engine at around 190 degrees. These are very simple to change and cheap from Auto Zone. The dealer's thermostat will be much more but will be a better construction as well. Your call there, but it should have been changed with the water pump and especially after a boil over. With proper control of flow, the water absorbs heat from the engine and gets rid of it in the radiator. Be sure the radiator is in good condition and not blocked up with a bunch of grass, bugs, or bent fins. You do mention that the temperature goes up when at a stoplight or idling and that brings another element into the picture. Your car has plenty of airflow through the radiator to cool the water WHEN YOU ARE MOVING. It has NO airflow when you are stopped. No airflow, no cooling... simple as that. So, the car is equipped with a radiator fan that is utterly useless when moving but very important when you are stopped.

Checking it is easy... Get in the car and let it warm up to normal temperature... around fifteen minutes if a cold start. The fan should come on automatically once the engine heats enough to make a temperature switch that is mounted on or about the therostat housing. No fan, no cooling and over heating at idle or no air flow conditions.

You have the potential for three problems:

1. Dirty mechanic

2. Faulty thermostat

3. Faulty fan switch/fan (or the dirty mechanic didn't plug the wire back into the switch!)

Temporary answer: Don't stop! The wind will keep the engine cool and blow all that nasty smelling oil smoke behind you!

I was asked to look at a Forester SL (I believe it was a 98) that the timing belt went out on while he was driving. He was told the gear went out on it. I am just a mechanic as a hobby and I only have experience with V-8 and V-6 Fords and GMs, and 4 banger Hondas, but I have never heard of the timing gear breaking. I've heard that the flat 4s are a ***** to work on and I wonder if anyone could tell me what I may be getting into by looking at this for him. The guy I am doing this for knows almost nothing about cars, and I am wondering if someone told him the (tensioner) pulley broke and he only remembers it as the gear, b/c that is what I seem to be finding on line. Also, I seem to be finding conflicting reports as to whether this is an interference engine or not. I told him I don't mess with valve damage and since he was driving when this happened I am afraid that it has some damage. Any help anyone could offer would be great. Start by getting all of the external stuff out of the way - the hood is tiny so remove it (trust me - it is a lot easier to work on a car with the hood off). Jack it up and put it on stands too.

Remove any accessory junk, coolant overflow, hoses, etc., be very careful with any wiring and connections - then start taking stuff off the engine - alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor (you don't necessarily have to remove them, sometimes you can use zip-ties to hold them up out of the way).

Once you can access the front of the engine, remove the timing belt cover (sometimes easier said than done). I break most of them, because they aren't designed to come off while the engine is in the car (without jacking the engine up and removing a motor mount).

Be ABSOLUTELY SURE to check for timing marks on the crank and cam - if both gears do not have them, then you will need to mark the gears and the block/head so you can put it back into time when you put the new belt on. Failure to do so can cause a lot of wasted time, and could possibly damage the engine.

Turn the engine over (pulling the spark plugs makes this easier to do - and you probably need to inspect those anyway), until it is at 'TDC', meaning that both the crank and the cam timing marks are pointing straight up (the engine might be at a bit of a tilt).

Triple check your timing marks - and then release the tensioner (most people suggest replacing the tensioner along with the timing belt and water pump, but I never have). Remove the old belt, and then remove the water pump.

Install the new water pump - put the new timing belt on, line up your timing marks, and let the tensioner back down.

Cuss when it goes out of time when it tightens up and turns one or both gears. Release it again, and play with the way they are lined up so that when it tightens up that both crank and cam timing marks are EXACTLY lined up. If you put the whole thing back together and it isn't in time, you will be very mad.

With that said, here's my advice.

The Probe was built by Ford between 1988 to 1997. It was a collaboration between Ford and Mazda built on the Mazda GD platform. It shares many parts with the Mazda MX-6. It is also an old car so I understand why you would want to do it yourself instead of paying a mechanic several hundred dollars.

First, get the exact year, make, model, transmission, and engine for this car.

Go to the Auto Zone website. They have an excellent Do It Yourself section. You can have online access to many service manuals for free. You can not download the manuals. However you can print any sections you will need. You must register to access this section. Registration is free. I have never received any SPAM by registering.

You should study your downloaded pages closely before you proceed to see if you are getting in over your head.

Some additional advice.

A little organization will go a long way.

Get some 1 quart and 1 gallon zip lock bags, generic will do. Get a roll of 2 inch masking tape. Get a sharpie. Every time you remove a part put it and any fasteners and any hardware in a zip lock bag and label it with your sharpie. If the part is too big for a zip lock bag, put only the loose parts in the bag.

Label every electrical connector, vacuum line, fluid line, etc, with masking tape and a sharpie

Most people have access to a digital camera. Before you start take several pictures from different angles of the engine. With each major component you remove take a new set of pictures. I have owned 6 of them and have gotten high mileage out of all of them. Get this service done like yesterday. Don't trust anyone other than the dealer or an experienced VW shop to do this service. When the belt is replaced they also need to replace the belt tensioner which many times will go bad and cause the belt to snap when it shouldn't have. Part of the reason the service is so expensive is because of the great deal of labor involved. You will also need a new water pump as part of the service, new valve cover gaskets and probably a new camshaft seal also. Even though this service will run you a 1k dollars a new engine will run you 4-5k so get it done. Also use a quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1 in this engine and change it early 4-5k as these motors had problems with engine sludge which can also cause them to fail prematurely. Never use dino oil in one of these motors! Good luck!

I had a timing belt go out on my previous car (17 year old Toyota with over 165k on the odometer at the time). Luckily it was a free-wheeling (non-interference) engine and there was no valve damage. However, I was stranded on the side of the road, had to pay for towing, and wasn't able to make it to work that day because of it. If the belt is expected to last 90,000 miles, I would personally probably change it every 85,000 just to be safe. You wouldn't run a car on almost-bald tires, would you?

Also, change the water pump at the same time. Might as well since you will be in there anyway.

Better safe than sorry, I always say. I find Toyotas to be extremely reliable, but even the most reliable engines will fail if not properly maintained and cared for. 1,000 miles may not make much of a difference, but all it takes is a stroke of bad luck to screw up a perfectly good engine. No sense in procrastinating.

My Audi is recommended for 90K. But everybody is screaming about timing belts breaking as low as 70K. So I had it change at 60K miles. I figure I would have to do it sooner or later, and I don't plan on holding the car till 120K (another 60K). So either way I would only do 1 change so why risk riding it for so long?

Any place you take it to, should not charge you any more than 3 hours of labour to do the repair. Any more than that, they are ripping you off. If so, the sizes for the fasteners are 17mm for the engine mount fasteners, mostly 10mm for the splash guards underneath, as well as the fasteners that secure the hoses up top in the engine compartment,13mm for the belt tensioner bolt, 19mm for the crank pulley, and I think two 11 or 10mm nuts that hold the timing cover. You will need to take the pass. side front tire off. Take the serpantine belt pulley off of the crank and then take the cover off to get all of the trash out of the sprocket. Then put it on TDC, then put your cam in time. Then you can put the belt on. Loosen the pulley on the water pump all of the way. When you put the belt on, tighten up the idler on the water pump, but not too tight. It will shorten the life of the belt if it's too tight. If it's too tight the motor will make a whirrr but it won't be damaging. You can get more performance if you advance your cam 1 tooth. Good luck.

It is a perfect engine to start with as a beginner. I started like everybody from scratch and now I know more than back then. I would advise you to either buy a technical manual for this car or get someone to supervise you (just in case) otherwise, should something come up you might be in for the whole day if not longer. The timing belt is located on the pass side towards the right front wheel. You have a lot of component to remove before you get to it including the engine mount. To remove the mount you have to somehow suspend the engine or support it on a jack (do not put the jack on the oil pan, find a solid point to support the power train). Also, it is important to mark the belt and line - up the top with the bottom of the engine. You have to find the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys. Lining-up the engine has to start from TDC point.

Overhaul, not an easy job but at the same token its something that could be accomplished (with a little supervision).

All the belts and brackets have to come off the front of the engine and the balancer has to be removed. Then you have to support the front of the engine (passenger side) and remove the motor mount. Get a Haynes manual. It will give you some idea of what your up against. I would also recommend you replace the water pump and the idler pulleys while your in there. Once you start to dig in you will understand why I say that. You don't want to have to do that job in between belt replacements.

as for me, I go to the honda dealer and do the belts, water pump and coolant. its worth it to me to know its done right, guaranteed, and that it will last another 110k.

a 2003 Celica actually has a timing chain, not a belt. Timing belts were used up until the 1999 model when the switch was made for the 2000 and up models.

A timing chain is not replaced unless there is substantial engine wear/damage that causes the chain to become damaged. It is self-adjusting unit, you do not need to do anything with it.

If you have other maintenance concerns, check the maintenance logbook and owner's manual that came with the Celica or call a local Toyota dealership and ask to speak directly with the parts or service departments on service intervals. They should be able to provide you (at possibly a small cost) with a maintenance logbook for at least up to 100,000 miles if the Celica is missing it's logbook.

I was told by an independent mechanic that services Volvo vehicles only that I don't have to change the water pump while changing the belt because the water pump is not part of the timing belt tension. He also added that Volvo water pump rarely goes bad. Is there any truth in this claim? Volvo experts, I need your expert opinion.

Lexus RX300 Timing Belt-Need to Change Early?

I have a 1999 RX300 I purchased new, it has 61K miles on it. I have driven it easy. It is at the dealer now, they want to change the timing belt/water pump ($1,800, wow!) They tell me it is showing some signs of wear. But, the manual says 90K or 6 years. I realize it is 6 years, but no where near 90K. I have not seen the belt myself. i think you should ask ur dealer to let u take a look, if they dont let u, take it to a good mechanic (recommended by someone you know) and tell them to let u take a look at it.

Anyway, as to your question. I broke a timing belt on an Integra once. Real funny, because I was actually starting the car to take to the dealer to have the belt replaced because it was right at 90k. I did not make it. Anyway, it really can screw up the motor if this belt breaks and you keep cranking it like I did...fool. Ended up costing around 1750.00 and the car was actually never right again. So since then I will spend 2 or 3 hundred bucks to replace a timing belt early...but not 1800.00.

So I would probably recommend you go somewhere else and have the Timing belt replaced, but I would not worry about the water pump...why do they say that needs to be replaced? is the car running hot? etc... I think they are just trying to get 1800.00 from you for 2 or 3 hundred dollars worth of necessary work.

This reminds me of when my grandmother blew an A/C compressor in her Mercedes. Dealer wanted 650 for the compressor. Turns out that this Mercedes used an AC Delco Compressor, went to GM and got the same exact compressor for around 200 bucks.
